Glenarden Community Center

Glenarden, Maryland

LDA reviewed deficiencies in the existing community center and Theresa Banks pool, and reviewed programming and design options based on minimal to maximum renovation and remodeling options.

The Maryland-National Capital Park & Planning Commission opted for a design, which would eliminate all inherent deficiencies. The adapted plan necessitated building a new gymnasium and gutting out ancillary support functions within the facility that did not meet current codes or comply with ADA regulations.

The project scope included demolition of the existing community center and the renovation of the gymnasium into a two story space comprising of a new entrance, reception control area, administration office, multipurpose room with ability to be divided into two rooms, exercise room, game room, meeting room, locker rooms and required ancillary support functions. New construction comprises of a new entrance lobby and a college size gymnasium with bleacher seating.

The parking count for the facility is increased from the present count of ±130 parking spaces to ±180 parking spaces. The additional parking spaces are located on the north side by relocating the basketball courts next to the football and softball fields, and are connected with sidewalks. The project is going through the permit process for construction to begin in the spring of 2005.
