LDA provided the design and construction document phases for the 22,000 sq. ft. community center adjoining the existing Fort Washington Forest Park Elementary School. The community center/school program provides a new gymnasium, computer classrooms and ancillary support functions for students’ use during non-peak hours of the community center. The layout of the community center is conceived in a way that the facility’s functional spaces are entirely self-contained and can function during the day without the use of the gymnasium and computer room. These facilities are available to the community after school hours.
The curvilinear form of the building and circular drive in the front enables saving most of the existing mature trees, creating a minimal impervious area, and providing a harmonious addition to the existing low profile of the school with compatible materials with minimal impact on the site and surroundings.
The new gymnasium with community center will fulfill the long awaited need of the school and community at large.
